About Us
The Association of Arizona Food Banks is a private, non-profit
organization established in 1984 to bring a more efficient,
coordinated approach to the enormous task of providing emergency
food to the growing number of Arizona's hungry citizens.
The
Association of Arizona Food Banks maintains a partnership between
the public and private sectors to improve service delivery and
maximize food resources at every level. It is also known as an
organization on the cutting edge of programs, services and advocacy
on behalf of those whose voice is seldom heard.
The
Association of Arizona Food Banks has been recognized nationally for
its outstanding achievements by such entities as America's Second
Harvest National Food Bank Network and the United States Department
of Agriculture.
The
Arizona Statewide Gleaning Project, a program of the Association of
Arizona Food Banks, was established in 1993 to help coordinate the
rescuing of produce that otherwise would go to waste. Individually,
food banks have been gleaning since 1980. In 1993 the food banks
joined forces to create a statewide network to facilitate the
rescuing and distribution of product around the state. The Arizona
Statewide Gleaning Project's success is directly related to this
collaboration and cooperation.
